This Weekend at

The Knitter's Edge

Hello PA! I am back from LA- where it was sunny and warm. Hopefully I brought some of that warm weather back with me and the deep freeze will lessen a bit.

The TNNA trade show was long, hard, and busy. I didn't get much time to see new stuff, but did get some new ideas for this spring.

While I was gone- it appears like every one here was busy knitting hats for the homeless. I am extremely happy and proud to report that we have already surpassed our 100 hat mark- so now we are off to 200!!! I hope you are all with me.

Some Class News

For the weekend- we have the following classes:

Also for next week- New classes will include a fingerless mitten class with Lynn on Wednesday 4-6 PM, and Pat's new design your own sweater class on Wednesday mornings 10-12 noon.

Stephanie has found some new more Springlike cowls and scarves- The one she is working on right now is much like the Odessa hat she did in the fall. I'll have a photo next week. Join Stephanie for some lighter weight accent pieces.

SUPER Easy Fingerless Mitts

Everyone who came into the shop today stopped and just had to try these on. They are cute and very easy to knit. One mitt takes less than 2 hours! Bring size 5 or 6 double pointed needles.

Do you have a sweater that you just love, but it is wearing out, or its in the wrong color? Join Pat to learn how to design your own, or recreate one. Make changes to an existing pattern to make it just for you.

The January Challenge- How is it going?

Well, we have already met our goal of 100 hats for the homeless. Man that was fast! When I told Laura Howell- head of our charity knitting group today- she said:

"100 hats?? I said 200 hats!".

So we are off once again to knit more- 100 more to be exact.

There is more Encore Mega coming tomorrow, and the Encore Worsted, Comfort, and Ella Rae Superwash are plentiful at the Shop. Please join in to help us reach 200 hats. As of 9:00 PM tonight (Thursday) the bin held 106 hats- so thats only 94 more to go. I know we can do it.

I am adding Maria's Mega Hat pattern in this newsletter- a really fast hat that Maria - age 9- knitted in just a few hours. Her Grandmother- Marilyn- our kid's class teacher wrote this blurb about Maria's hats:

She started the red one at the store at 2:30 Sat afternoon & finished it before going to bed that night.

She began the white one the following day (Sun) and was done in time for dinner.

She began the green one that evening (Sun) and finished it this past weekend, along w/ a lavender one.

She is now working on a multi-colored one, hat #5, in less than 10 days!

Maria- you are one dedicated knitter and an inspiration to us all!

Remember-as an added incentive- for every hat brought in- we will add your name to a drawing for 2 prizes to be awarded at the end of January. The prizes will be a ball winder, and a Lantern Moon Palm Tote-in your choice of color.

Only 1 rule: To get your name into the drawing- please use yarn from the Knitter's Edge. We will accept hats knitted in other yarns- as the need for these items goes far beyond our need to sell yarn, but we feel it is fair to restrict the prizes to our customers. We will have lots of yarns available at low to bargain prices so this will not be a hardship for anyone.

January Challenge Hat Pattern- Maria's Mega Hat

Maria's Encore Mega

Rolled Brim Hat for Adults

MATERIALS: 1- 100g ball of Encore Mega; 16" circular needle size US 15, set of double pointed needles size US 11 or 13, and 1 stitch marker.
GAUGE: 2 sts = 1" over st st.

Loosely cast on 40 sts onto circular needle, place marker, and join, being careful not to twist the stitches. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 8", ending at the marker.
Begin decreasing on the following round as follows, changing to double pointed needles when needed:
Round 1: * (Knit 6, k2tog): repeat from * around..
Round 2: * (Knit 5, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 3: * (Knit 4, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 4: * (Knit 3, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 5: * (Knit 2, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 6: * (Knit 1, k2tog); repeat from * around.
Round 7: * (K2tog); repeat from * around.
Cut the yarn leaving a 12" tail, thread it through the remaining stitches, draw up tightly and secure. Weave in the ends.

Ella Rae- the Superwash wool is now being closed out for $6.00 a ball. At this price it will not last long.
