Unwind This Week ... at
The Knitter's Edge

May is starting out with a Bang!

2 really big announcements in this newsletter.

First up we are very pleased to announce that we will now be offering Appalacian Baby garments, kits and yarn.

Thats right- not just the knit and crochet kits, but some finished garments as well.  Have you ever found out that you needed a baby gift at the last minute?  No time to knit something (even my collection of 8 hour baby afghans can take too long!) Now you can get these adorable garments from us.

Knit and kitted in organic cotton- no dyes, no chemicals- these sweaters, throws, kits, and yarn are purity at its best.

Our second big announcement is all about PAT!!

Pat lives a good drive from the shop.
But once the sun goes down after 8:00 in spring until the day in late summer when sunset shifts back to before 8:00- Pat has agreed to do an evening class!  So this year, from May 15 to August 15 ( yep I looked it up) Pat is ours on Wednesday nights!!

We were thrlled last summer when Pat did a series of Tunisian crochet classes in the evenings.  This summer she is taking on a larger agenda- and I just can't say enough about how excited I am.

On May 16, May 23, May 30, and June 6, Pat will lead a comprehensive overview of Knitting Styles.  For these 4 weeks students will study the history of these styles and try their hands (and needles) at mastering them.  The styles include: Portuguese, Eastern and Western European, Scandanavian, and True British or Lever Knitting.  She has not totally decided on the lesson order yet so watch for more details.  We hope that students will attend more than one session so they can truly get the feel of the differences in knitting styles.  We will be taking sign ups immediately.  If there is a session you know you will miss- please let us know.  Classes will be Wednesdays 6:30 -8:30 pm.

From June to July, Pat's Wednesday night sessions will involve BroomStick Lace- both Knit and Crochet.

July thru August class subjects have yet to be determined.  We are very open to suggestions.

And remember- with our fine teaching staff- the new things Pat will be teaching this summer can be carried through the fall.

For instance:

Milly loves the educational part of knitting and crochet- its rich history and techniques involved.  Milly will gladly take all that Pat will be teaching and carry it forward- on Wednesday nights all year long.

Appalacian Baby

The Knitter's Edge Welcomes Appalachian Baby.

Lamb's Ear Cardigan

Appalachian Baby offers a unique American approach to contemporary knitwear and design. The sweaters, gifts and knitting kits are handmade by a community of Appalachian artisans against a backdrop of extraordinary natural beauty.

The Appalachian community holds a rich sense of place and family, and those values are imbued in everything they offer: gifts of quality and caring, intended to be passed on and cherished for generations to come.

Their beautifully presented kits included yarn, detailed instructions, handpainted buttons and other handmade trims that make the sweaters unique and memorable baby gifts.

Crochet Welcome Home Set.
So if you need a very special baby gift or want to make one, this is the new product company for you. Appalacian Baby: We welcome you with open arms!

Besides the finished garment and knit & crochet kits, we have chosen to carry the Appalachian Baby yarn which is a pure 100% U.S. certified organic cotton specially spun for Appalacian Baby at a U.S. cotton mill. It is worsted weight and has 168 yards per 3 ounce ball.  We just love this yarn: it is really soft and when washed, the cotton "blooms" and softens even more.

Tassel Hooded Cardigan

The garments shown here are just a sampling of the beautiful things we have received from Appalacian Baby.  You need to come in to see, touch - even caress these beautiful items.

Tuesday May 8  6:30 - 8:30 pm

Felted bags with Lauren!

only 4 spots remain

We had so much fun this past month.  We were so fortunate to have had 2 classes with Lauren.  She is coming back again next month- for a class on Felted bags.   She has so many felted bag patterns available:

The Mary Bag

The Dani Clutch (2 sizes)

Lauren's patterns are available at the shop, but you will really have a great time taking one of her classes.  And whenever Lauren visits- we ALWAYS put some Galway on sale!

Please call to sign up.

Toe Up socks with Debra

Monday afternoons- 1:00 - 3:00

Friday mornings 10:00 - 12:00

Debra's Bungee Socks

Last month Debra taught Magic Loop Cuff Down for 2 socks.  Keeping with the same theme, she is beginning classes for Magic Loop Toe Up for 2 socks Friday Mornings from 10:00 to 12:00 and Monday Afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00.
She will supply a basic beginner pattern though you are welcome to bring a favorite of your own.

Any sock yarn will do.  You will need a 40" or longer needle in a size that works with your chosen yarn.

Tuesday May 1--6:30 - 8:30 pm

Jan's class on the couch

Catch-up night

Last month Jan started everyone on a shawl, but some have not been able to work on it as they should since Jan keeps coming up with so many new projects.  Join Jan on Tuesday, May 1 to get back to working on your shawl.  If you haven't started yours yet- well lets get it going!!

Thursday May 3

Class with JoAnne 10:00 - 12:00

This week we will stray away from our washcloths to start a nice mid Spring project- we'll call it our May Jacket.

We have selected 3 possibilities- each using a worsted weight yarn. 2 are knit from the top down, and all 3 to go 50+"

Technique classes-

My classes on May 4 and May 7 are both full.

I am now scheduling another Cast on/Bind off class for

Friday, May 11- 10:00 - 12:00.

Learn 5 cast ons, 5 bind offs, when to use them and when to not.  Other important tidbits of knowledge will be added along the way.

Bring 2 or 3 sets of needles- anything around size 7 thru 9 plus a set of double points.  Please arrive on time as this is a FULL

2 hours of stuff to learn.

Please call to sign up!  It will fill up fast.  Also- keep your eyes on the newsletter- I will add more technique classes as fast as I can.

Tuesdays May 1   4:00 - 6:00 pm

Shawls with Lori

This week Lori's Tuesday afternoon class will try their hands at a shawl.  The Summerflies shown here is a proven classic- I can't rave about this pattern enough.  So customizable- workable at several gauges, in many different yarns.

This is just a suggestion- but a really good one.  Many other shawl ideas are available.

May 3- Thursday 1:00 - 3:00 pm

NEW Beginner crochet class with Amy

This past week Amy taught us to crochet up this market bag.  Most chose either Covington as Amy and I both did, or Fantasy Naturale.  2 hanks did it.    I loved the class, and got almost all of my base done before time ran out.

This week Amy will be continuing the market bag OR if you are finished- you can start her new project- an embellished towel for Spring.  You can later add a crochet washcloth to the basket- which acts as a pocket.

For the market bag, you will need 2 hanks of Covington or Fantasy Naturale and a crochet hook -size H.

Please note...  Amy encourages all to work on a crochet project of their own choice.  The featured project of week is just a suggestion- but it is usually a fun one!

Saturday May 7

Class with JoAnne 10:00 - 12:00

We have decided that this spring is a good time to try our hands at a vest.  I have found several possible patterns as shown here:

The Long vest is worsted weight and knit side to side- it goes up to about 55".

The Vaill Island Vest is also knit side to side with a worsted weight yarn but only goes up to about 45".  It has simple shaping.

E024- Openwork Top

This is a one piece FAST knit using a worsted to chunky weight yarn.  It goes up to about 55", BUT I can upsize it very easily.  You can also make it longer or lengthen the sleeves easily.  This pattern is extremely customizable.

Last Saturday many chose their patterns and their yarns but you can still sign up and join us.  This is sort of a Knit A Long- so we will have lots of fun along the way.

Monday May 7-- 10:00 - 12:00 pm

Class with JoAnne (taking over for Jackie)

JoAnne will continue working on Jackie's Entrelac scarf next week- using either our new Ayatori or Silk Garden Lite.  Bring size 6 needles.

We can continue the Entrelac scarf for a couple of weeks for those working on it.

I would also like to suggest we start a class project of a shawl.  This is one of the only classes that has not done a shawl yet.  We have ideas at all levels to expertise.  Join me next Monday morning and lets see what we can do!

Thursdays 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Men's Class- Thursday May 3

The men's class will continue.  We could use a few more attendees, but the guys are enjoying their knitting time and learning a few new things along the way.

New classes just keep on coming!

Remember, in our classes-you can always do your own thing!

All regular classes are $6.00- Cash only please.

General Knitting classes - work on your own project if you wish! When you are a class member- we welcome you to return at any time for additional assistance.  We will always help any knitter get through any project- we are great at hand holding, while encouraging you to move forward in your knitting knowledge.

For classes, we hope that your yarn supplies will be purchased at our shop.

Flemington Guild Visit

Last week we had the pleasant opportunity to host a Knitting Guild from Flemington, NJ.  We set up 2 class sessions prior to the visit so we had project kits all set for our group upon their arrival.  The morning session included a choice of several washcloths at different skill levels, and the afternoon  was spent working on colorful wool hotpads to felt later.  I was their personal shopper and teacher for the day- a task I thoroughly loved.  Everyone seemed to have a very productive and enjoyable day.  I hope they come back soon.

Just Arrived

Of course the arrival of Appalacian Baby is our really big new product news!  But we did get some other mention- worthy goodies over the past week as well:

Each day we will display a different product- sometimes something new, other times something you may have missed.  Watch for our featured product- each day at The Knitter's Edge.

Tuesday:  Smiley Stripes

Smiley Stripes is the painted version of  Baby Bamboo.  Same composition (80% bamboo, 20% wool) and same yardage and gauge- these striped colorways can be so much fun.  Check out this little girl's cardigan.

We have several colorways available- so many stripes- from subtle to shocking.  Great for kids- and adults.  Wow! what a cool scarf this would make.

Wednesday:  Rowan Felted Tweed

Long Cowl

Rowan is synonymous

with quality.  Felted Tweed is a pure wool beauty for this fine yarn design line.  We carry a full color pallet for you to consider.

Try this free pattern for Rowan Felted Tweed- what a fine cowl- surprisingly soft, and so rich in color.

 Thursday:  Cotton Batik

100% cotton-  from Universal Yarns.  Cotton Supreme Batik is a great self striping worsted weight yarn.

The first thing everyone comments on when they hold a ball of this yarn is Oh My Goodness- how soft!  And it truly is one of the softest cottons you will ever feel.

And then there's the striping- WOW- just take a look at the scarf Loretta knit.  The 2 pieces are knit separately then tied together.  Free patterns available with your yarn purchase for this tied scarf or the side to side triangle scarf shown in red above.

What our customers are knitting...

My Thursday morning washcloth class has gone shawl crazy!  And wow are they good at this!  I showed a citron shawl Anne knit out of Somerset in last week's newsletter.  Now, here are 2 more shawls- the new Afternoon Tea Shawlette (above) knit by Noel and the Summerflies Shawl knit by Linda.  Keep it up ladies.  These are beautiful!

 A Free Pattern for you

Somerset is a delightful light worsted weight cotton/ silk blend that I absolutely love.  It has unfortunately been discontinued, but fortunately, I was able to obtain a nice stock of it before it was all gone.  Now being offered at a great price- stop by to see this yarn and think about all of the fun things you can do with it.

May I suggest this 3 ball feather & fan scarf- very feminine.

Feather & Fan Scarf

Materials: 3 balls Somerset

Gauge: ~18 sts = 4" using size US 8 needles in pattern or size necessary to obtain gauge.

Needles: US 8 needles.

Size: 8 x 60"

Loosely cast on 42 sts
Knit 6 rows (3 garter ridges on each side)

Row 1: (RS) K3, * (K2tog) 3 times, (YO, K1) 6 times, (K2tog) 3 times . Repeat from * once, end K3.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K3, P36, K3.

Repeat these 4 rows to desired length, end with Row 1 then knit 6 rows.  Bind off loosely.

Whats in the Pool?

Bungee is still in the pool!

Bungee-- $6.99 a ball!  This is more than 50% off!

Bungee is a wonderful sock yarn- at a heavy fingering weight- this yarn is 95% fine superwash merino containing just enough Elite Spandex to give it good stretchiness.  Both solids and striping colorways are available.

We will have free sock patterns available and just one ball will make a pair of socks.  But Bungee is also great for other things too- Hats, Mitts, and Cowls.  There is even someone on Ravelry who knitted a stretchy Bikini.
